Discipline: Foundational Sciences
Prerequisites: None
Available Sites: Mount Pleasant, Saginaw, Extramural
Duration: 2 or 4 weeks

Research is an important element in the development and training of the medical students. Students can tailor a research elective to their needs by contacting CMED faculty engaged in basic science, clinical or translational research. For Year 1 and 2 students, students are encouraged to use the summer break for research, to avoid concurrent obligations with the formal curriculum. For Year 3 and 4 students, the elective will be taken during the allocated 4-week periods. Although students may at their discretion pursue research beyond the 4-week period, only four weeks will be considered as fulfilling the elective requirement for the MD degree at CMED. Research electives that are supervised by extramural faculty will count toward the 12 week maximum of allowed extramural elective credit.

Key Objectives

  • Gain experience in basic science, clinical, or educational outcomes research through a focused experience with faculty mentor.
  • Significant work towards a product of publishable quality is expected as part of this experience.
  • Specific project objectives will be determined by the research mentor in partnership with the student and submitted on “Research Elective Proposal Form.” This form must be submitted to the Office of Research at least 8 weeks in advance of the elective.

Assessment Method

College of Medicine standard elective assessment will be completed by supervising faculty at conclusion of elective clerkship.
