The purpose of the fourth-year advanced general surgery elective is to give students the opportunity to enhance the knowledge acquired on the third-year general surgery clerkship, to understand better the principles in treating patients with surgical diseases, both on an outpatient and inpatient basis, and to improve upon technical skills introduced during the third year. The elective is designed for students either interested in pursuing a surgical career, or those students hoping to gain a better understanding of the field of general surgery as it will apply to their future practices.
