Protect yourself and your family by knowing what to do when you see lightning or hear thunder as a warning. Lightning strikes the earth 8,000,000+ times per day. Consequences of strikes can be serious. An average of 35 deaths happen per year in the United States. About 10% of people struck by lightning die, mostly from heart attacks. Other lightning injuries include blunt trauma, neurological syndromes, muscle injuries, eye injuries ("lightning-induced cataract"), skin lesions, and burns.
