CMU College of Medicine history
​​​CMU College of Medicine welcomed first students in 2013


The Central Michigan University College of Medicine opened its doors to the inaugural class of 64 students in Aug. 3, 2013, with a white coat ceremony in McGuirk Arena.

Discussions to launch a medical school started in 2008 when the CMU Board of Trustees approved the development of a medical school with a mission to produce highly educated physicians to provide healthcare in underserved regions. In 2010, the Board approved a formal relationship to forward medical education with students and residents with Covenant HealthCare and St. Mary’s of Michigan in Saginaw. CMU also assumed control of the Saginaw-based Synergy health clinics, renaming them CMU Health.


Sept. 18, 2008: CMU Board of Trustees approves development of a medical school.

Feb. 18, 2010: Groundbreaking for College of Medicine building on Central Michigan campus.

Dec. 2, 2010: CMU trustees approve formal relationship between CMU, Synergy Medical Education Alliance, Covenant HealthCare and St. Mary's of Michigan in Saginaw through the College of Medicine.

Jan. 1, 2011: CMU joins Synergy Medical Education Alliance, which is renamed CMU Medical Education Partners.

Feb. 8, 2012: Liaison Committee on Medical Education grants preliminary accreditation to the CMU College of Medicine.

Aug. 1, 2012: Synergy Medical Education Alliance becomes CMU Health.

Sept. 21, 2012: Grand opening of $24 million, 60,000 square-foot CMU College of Medicine building in Mount Pleasant.

Dec. 7, 2012: LCME accreditation report shows CMU College of Medicine in compliance and preliminary accreditation status remains in place.

Dec. 19, 2012: CMU College of Medicine receives five-year accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

May 17, 2013: CMU announces plan to construct medical education facility on the campus of Covenant HealthCare. Completion date is May 2015.

Aug. 4, 2013: Inaugural class of 64 students – 58 from the state of Michigan – is welcomed to campus in a convocation that includes a white coat ceremony.

November 2013: Preliminary work begins on a 46,000-square-foot educational building on the campus of Covenant HealthCare. It will include a 10,000-square-foot simulation center.

August 2014: The second class – 104 students selected from 3,007 applications – begins studies.

September 2014: CMU Board of Trustees approves construction/renovation plan for clinical and educational space on the campus of St. Mary's of Michigan to be completed by spring 2016.

May 2015: Construction completed for the educational building on the campus of Covenant HealthCare.

July 6, 2015: First third-year students will begin clinical rotations and community clerkships in Saginaw and other sites around Michigan.

August 2015: The third class – selected from 4,603 applicants – arrives on the CMU campus.
