A Message from the Dean
It is my pleasure to provide a progress report on behalf of the CMU College of Medicine.

Beginning this summer, on August 4, 2013 to be exact, Central Michigan University will welcome the inaugural class for the College of Medicine (CMED). Drawn heavily from within the state, with many students from the central and northern regions, CMED students will begin their journey into the profession of medicine, a first step towards helping to address the physician shortage in the Great Lakes Bay region and areas north.

As a community-engaged program, CMU’s College of Medicine will provide learning opportunities in partnership with physicians and hospitals in medically underserved areas of central and northern Michigan. This includes facilities in Saginaw (urban underserved) as well as in small towns and rural communities.

Clinical experiences will be based in patient-centered medical practices with emphases on family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics-gynecology, general surgery, psychiatry, and emergency medicine.

CMED students will be taught an innovative medical curriculum in the state-of-the-art and technology-rich College of Medicine building (contiguous with the College of Health Professions). Local physicians will provide clinical experience integrated with more formal classroom and laboratory instruction.

Inter-professional education (IPE) will help to create the teams of professionals requisite to meet the needs of patients in the region. CMED will also collaborate with well-established CMU programs and resources, including The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions, the College of Science and Technology, the College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences, and other regional colleges and universities in the creation of IPE programs.

Campus-wide, excitement is building as finishing touches are made to the curriculum and as we anticipate the arrival of our first CMED students. Our wider community has fully embraced CMED and will join us in celebrating the arrival of our inaugural class.
