Francisco J. Martinez is an Associate Professor of Pathology in the Foundational Sciences at CMU CMED. He received his M.D. degree from the State University of San Luis Potosi, Mexico and Ph D. in experimental medicine (Dr. med) from the State University of Nuevo Leon, Mexico, where he characterized the action of peroxisomicine A1 (PA1), a dimeric-anthracenone natural compound, in normal eucariotic and malignant cell lines from the ATCC through apoptosis induction and its effects on cell cycle events. This was followed by the search of specific targets and known pathways of apoptosis, in HL60 and HL60/MX2 cells derived of human leukemia and confirming apoptosis by DNA degradation with fluorochrome stains and in FACScan as well as selective targets of apoptosis: DNA topoisomerase II; PARP; caspase 3 and 8 by cell and molecular biology methods, aiming to the possible development of chemotherapeutic agents for either PA1 radical metabolites alone or in combination.

His longstanding career as medical educator started as a trainee at a large referral medical center in Mexico City in Human Pathology and in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Saint John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit, MI., followed by pathology faculty and research positions once back in Mexico City and Monterrey City and in American International University medical schools, imparting the knowledge of disease to medical colleagues, medical undergraduates and trainees at all levels. He also developed as consultant physician practicing pathology and laboratory medicine in hospital and clinical laboratories.
