Dr. Meredith Goodwin was born in Detroit, Michigan. After graduating from the University of Michigan with a bachelor’s degree in Honors Biology, she completed medical school at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. She completed residency training in Family Medicine at UCLA in 1990, then joined Kaiser Permanente as a staff physician for two years.
In the summer of 1992, Geisinger Medical Center lured her away from big city medicine to a rural practice in central Pennsylvania. Here she honed her outpatient and inpatient teaching skills with students, residents and physician assistants. The summer of 1994 brought a not-to-be-missed opportunity to run the inaugural Family Medicine Clerkship at Brown University School of Medicine which also included use of a standardized family, one of the first programs in the country to incorporate this teaching method.
Dr. Goodwin moved to San Francisco in 2000, where after a few months back with Kaiser, she started working full time for a medical software company called Epocrates. During this time she joined the United States Air Force Reserves. In 2006 she found herself lured her back into academics full time at The Florida State University College of Medicine in Tallahassee, Florida, teaching students about how to approach and perform the physical examination. The opportunity to return to her roots and help establish a brand new medical school drew her here to Mount Pleasant, and she joined the faculty at the CMU College of Medicine in 2012.
