Biographical Sketch:

Jamie K. Alan, RPh, PharmD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Pharmacology in the Foundational Sciences Discipline in the College of Medicine. Dr. Alan received her PharmD from Ohio Northern University in 2005, where she graduated with high distinction. She has been a licensed and practicing pharmacist for 8 years and has experience in retail, hospital, clinical and compounding pharmacy along with experience in conducting and designing clinical trials.

Dr. Alan received her PhD in Pharmacology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) in 2010. In her doctoral work, Dr. Alan studied the regulation of small GTPases and how their regulation/dysregulation impacts tumorigenesis, cell migration and metastasis. Dr. Alan's main doctoral work focused on studying regulation of the atypical Rho GTPase, Wrch-1 (Wnt-regulated Cdc-42 homolog-1). While at UNC-CH, Dr. Alan was active in the Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) group, where she worked to develop and implement an undergraduate program focused on providing a mentored research experience.

Dr. Alan did her postdoctoral work at the University of Kansas (KU). As a postdoctoral fellow, she studied the role of atypical Rho proteins in neuronal migration in the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans). Dr. Alan identified several novel pathways that regulate the atypical Rho GTPase chw-1 (Chp/Wrch-1). During her time at the University of Kansas, Dr. Alan co-founded and served as co-president for the University of Kansas Postdoctoral Association.

Dr. Alan's current research combines genetics, molecular biology, cancer biology and pharmacology. She studies the role of the atypical Rho GTPase Wrch-1 in tumorigenesis, cell migration and metastasis in both C. elegans and in cellulo using cell culture techniques. Dr. Alan is also currently developing a high-throughput drug screen for Rho GTPases using C. elegans as an "in vivo" test tube that will be used for drug discovery.
