Biographical Sketch:

Bob Fleischmann received a Ph.D. in viral genetics from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. His graduate work focused on elucidating the mechanism of action of the antiviral activity of interferon (IFN-alpha/beta). He was a post-doctoral fellow at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind., and at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas.

Fleischmann joined the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at UTMB in 1977 and served in that capacity until 2004. While at UTMB, he taught medical microbiology, biochemistry, microbial genetics, virology, physiology, and pathobiology and host defenses courses. He also served two terms as the graduate program director of the Microbiology and Immunology Graduate Program. While at UTMB, he served as course director for a number of courses, helped to develop the Integrated Curriculum Evaluation Exercise program and helped to design a new Medical School curriculum at UTMB that featured problem-based learning cases. In 2004, he moved to the University of Minnesota Medical School where he was a faculty member in the Department of Urologic Surgery. At the UMN, he taught medical microbiology and immunology and developed a PBL course called Foundations in Critical Thinking. In 2011, he joined the CMED faculty, where he serves as co-director of the Foundational Sciences of Medicine course and as coordinator of Year 1 and 2 courses.

Fleischmann is the author of more than 125 peer-reviewed original articles and reviews in the area of interferon and cytokine research. His current research focuses on efforts to develop cancer vaccines.
