Admissions Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the CMU College of Medicine, applicants will be required to:

1.      Complete the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) application.

2.      Complete and submit scores from the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) with a minimum overall score of 24 (MCAT prior to 2015) or 498 (MCAT 2015 test).

3.      Complete an undergraduate baccalaureate degree with a GPA of 3.25 or higher; honors courses will be highly regarded.

4.      The college courses required for admission to the College of Medicine include:

Two (2) semesters of Biological Science (courses such as Anatomy, Biology, Genetics, Physiology, Microbiology, etc., would fulfill this requirement) and two (2) labs are required.

Two (2) semesters of Organic Chemistry (at least one lab) OR one semester (1) Organic Chemistry and one semester (1) Biochemistry (at least one lab)

5.      Admission to the CMU College of Medicine is very competitive in nature.  In addition to the required courses listed above, we expect our most competitive applicants to be successful in a variety of courses, including significant experience in upper level courses that will help prepare them for the medical curriculum and the MCAT. These recommended courses include:

Inorganic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics, Behavioral Sciences (Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology), Medical Humanities, Communications, Ethics, Biostatistics

AP course credit can be accepted and must be documented as such on official transcript.

Minimum GPA of 2.0 in all required courses, Honors courses will be highly regarded.

6.      Submit three to five letters of recommendation through AMCAS using one of their acceptable forms of receipt.

7.      Document 200 hours of combined experience in health/medically related fields, community service, research, and leadership positions. Must include clinical experience and voluntary community service.

Supplemental Applications

Select applicants will be invited to continue the application process by submitting a supplemental application. The supplemental application will be emailed, and the deadline for receipt of the supplemental application will be noted on the email.

A nonrefundable fee of $100 is required. Applicants who have received an AMCAS fee waiver will also receive a fee waiver from Central Michigan University.

Letters of Recommendation

The following requirements apply to the letters of recommendation:

·         Each letter should be written by an author who knows the applicant through a professional relationship or association, and must have firsthand knowledge of the applicant’s qualifications, skills, attributes, and values.

·         Letter authors must be professionals whose background enables them to determine the applicant's qualifications.

·         If students apply from a university that provides a composite letter from a premedical program, the composite letter will be accepted.

Applicants are encouraged to have letters prepared early in the application process, and include their social security number and/or AMCAS ID numbers on the letters.

Experience/Community Service

The Experience/Community Service record submitted by the applicant should show an understanding of the roles of physicians in clinical and community settings, patient and population health issues, and how healthcare teams function.

International Applicants

Eligible applicants must be U.S. citizens, Canadian citizens or permanent residents of the United States or Canada.

*International Applicants who have demonstrated ties to CMU and/or Michigan may be considered for admission.  These applicants must also meet specific immigration status criteria (e.g. EB1 approval)
