The CMED Curriculum
Central Michigan University's College of Medicine (CMED) actively engages students in the learning process from the very first day. Each week consists of large group sessions, team-based learning (TBLTM), laboratory sessions and small group learning that promote active engagement with basic and clinical science presented in the context of patient scenarios and clinical context. The learning environment uses the latest, state-of-the-art simulation equipment in our classrooms and each group study room.
The CMED program is student-centered in that materials and activities help students learn what is needed to become the doctor who will transform health care in central and northern Michigan.

General Competencies and Educational Program Objectives that can be accessed
Years 1 & 2
Central Michigan University's curriculum emphasizes early case-based experiences and small group learning. The first two years are organized around the body's systems starting with the
Foundational Sciences of Medicine. This course lays the groundwork for all later courses by emphasizing normal physiology's variations and health, wellness and development.
Subsequent courses are centered on Organ Systems. Weekly themes focus on clinical presentations of disease and provide an organized manner of concentrating all sciences for that system in a clinical case setting. This educational model allows students to use what they are learning and understand how science knowledge is used to diagnose patients. The seven organ system courses are:
Reproduction/Human Development; Cardio-Pulmonary; Renal/Endocrine; Neuroscience/Behavior; Gastrointestinal; Musculoskeletal/Dermal; and
In addition there are three courses that vertically integrate with all courses throughout the first two years. They are
The Essentials of Clinical Skills,The Art of Medicine and
Society and Community Medicine.
Interspersed between course blocks are C.A.R.E.S. weeks (Continuous/ Improvement/ Curriculum,
Skills). Final assessments, reflection, focus groups and additional coursework fill these weeks.
Years 3 & 4
The Comprehensive Community Clerkship (CCC) launches students into their clinical training. The CCC is a six-month community-based longitudinal integrated clerkship. Students are placed in settings where the learning environment mimics the practice environment i.e. they engage in generalist care and work directly with internal medicine and family doctors, and pediatricians to fulfill duties such as rounds, tutorial sessions and virtual academic rounds. Students then progress into a succession of four-week single discipline clerkships and hospital-based rotations. There will be ample time for electives for career exploration.
