About Dr. Steven Gorsich
Job Title: Associate Professor of Biology
Dr. Gorsich is a cell biologist and geneticist who studies cellular stress tolerance using the budding yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
Two broad questions are being pursued in Dr. Gorsich’s lab:
- The basic biology question of how cellular stress affects spore development in yeast and more derived species
- The applied biology question, can a robust yeast strain be developed that is tolerant to the stresses found during industrial fermentation
In addressing these questions Dr. Gorsich and his students use a variety of cell biology, genetic, and molecular biology tools. Each student in the lab has an independent project, and has the opportunity to present their findings at regional or national meetings.
