​​​Students and faculty viewing mapsCMU's Department of Geography will equip you with cutting-edge computational and information technology to understand patterns of human activities and earth processes.

These programs offer you experiences beyond the classroom – including research projects and internships – that will enable you to advance your professional background.

Among the resources at CMU that will help you gain practical experience are:

CMU Center for Geographic Information Science. You will use the latest GIS hardware and software to provide geospatial research tools for solving academic, governmental and industrial concerns.

Undergraduate and graduate research opportunities. Following your curiosity to conduct important and respected research projects. For example, in the 2008 statewide Geographic Information Systems competition, CMU students earned first and second place in the graduate paper section; and the top three places in the undergraduate research poster section. The annual event, sponsored by Improving Michigan's Access to Geographic Information Systems, included tests such as mapping a cloud forest in Peru and monitoring wolf habitats in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. ​
