Undergraduate ProgramsCMU offers a prominent geography program with an emphasis on geospatial technology, environmental analysis and planning, and global studies.

Choose from majors in:

  • Geography: Environmental and Land Use Planning Concentration
  • Geography: Geographic Information Sciences (GISci) Concentration
  • Geography: Geospatial Analysis of Environment Concentration
  • Geography: Global Studies Concentration
  • Geography (B.S. in Ed.) - Secondary Ed.

The department also advises teaching and non-teaching Interdisciplinary majors and minors in Earth Science.

Geography and earth science majors are required to take courses which cover the basic content, concepts, and techniques of the disciplines. Elective hours should be selected in consultation with an advisor. You should consult with a departmental advisor early in your career at CMU.

Student Teaching

Students seeking the Department of Geography's recommendation for student teaching must have:

  • A signed major/minor in geography or earth science
  • A minimum GPA of 2.7 in the major/minor courses
  • Completed a Department of Geography application form
