Imagine gathering around a table with other students and faculty members to review the satellite maps of a park in Toluca, Mexico.
But these parks aren’t foreign to you; they’re nearby, and you’ve been studying them for days during your study abroad trip to enhance your CMU experience.
Study abroad will change your life and career options in many ways, and with today’s increasingly interdependent world, significant cross-cultural experience is what many employers and graduate schools are seeking.
You will have many opportunities to take your studies global and immerse yourself in a different culture through the study abroad program at CMU. There are more than 100 CMU programs – many taught in English – in 30 countries from which you can choose.
CS&E students recently have studied in countries such as England, Australia, Costa Rica, Russia, South Africa, China and Mexico. Studying abroad is an excellent way for you to:
- Enhance your education and understand the fields of science from an international perspective
- Broaden your academic horizons with great course work
- Globalize your worldview and advance your cross-cultural and problem-solving skills
- Gain confidence in yourself personally and professionally
You also can earn credit toward your degree in summer, semester or yearlong study abroad programs. Study abroad peer advisors are available to help you plan for a successful study abroad experience.

In support of its commitment to international education, the College of Science and Engineering has allocated funds to award as scholarships to CS&E students who participate in study abroad programs.
Ranging from $200-$2,000, the scholarships are intended to make study abroad more affordable and to encourage more students to take advantage of the excellent opportunities available.
Awards will be based on academic merit.
