Labs and Equipment

​​The CMU Department of Biology maintains modern facilities and instrumentation for use by undergraduate and graduate students as well as faculty researchers.

You can diversity your knowledge and career skills through course work and research experiences in the labs, including:

  • Aquatics wet lab with electron, compound light (including flourescent and scanning laser confocal) dissecting microscopes, as well as sample preparation instruments
  • Cell/tissue culture lab
  • Electrophysiology setups for patch clamping
  • High-pressure liquid chromatography
  • Laser scanning confocal microscope
  • Liquid scintillation counter
  • Microbiology, molecular biology and genetics labs with an ABI 7500 real-time PCR system
  • Software and computational facilities for bioinformatics/systematics of algae, plants and animals
  • Superspeed and ultra centrifuges
