Graduate Assistantships

Graduate Teaching Assistantships

The CMU Department of Mathematics has graduate teaching assistantships available for students in the graduate programs.

Graduate teaching assistantships (GTAs) are appointments that require teaching. Through an assistantship, you'll receive a stipend, tuition scholarship classification, travel accident insurance and special library privileges.

Compensation

Compensation Package for 2016-2017 Teaching Assistant:

  • Academic year stipends starting at $13,250 for M.A. and $16,750 for Ph.D.
  • Tuition waiver for 20 credit hours at on-campus rates for the academic year of hire and up to four credit hours for the subsequent summer session.
  • In-state tuition rates for additional credit hours
  • Possible summer support

Teaching responsibilities

GTAs normally teach two sections of Beginning Algebra (MTH 101) or Intermediate Algebra (MTH 105) per semester. Experienced GTAs may ask to, or may be asked to, teach other courses. During the summer session, GTAs normally provide tutoring for students in lower-level mathematics courses or assist a faculty member with a research project.

Re-appointment policy

Graduate teaching assistantships are awarded for one year. Assistantships awarded to students in a Master's degree program are renewable for one additional year. Graduate assistants enrolled in a Master's program requesting an assistantship beyond two years must compete with new applicants for such awards. Assistantships awarded to doctoral students making satisfactory progress are renewable.
