The CMU Department of Mathematics is committed to excellence in teaching, research, service and outreach and provides a foundation in mathematics, statistics and mathematics education for all undergraduate and graduate students. The programs within the department lead to discovery, analysis and dissemination of mathematics, mathematics education and statistics knowledge.
We actively recruit quality students for our graduate and undergraduate programs. In addition, a portion of our teaching is directed at meeting the mathematical needs of other graduate and undergraduate programs throughout Central Michigan University. The courses, designed in consultation with affected disciplines,provide mathematical training to students to allow them to utilize mathematics and statistics in solving problems related to their respective areas. Our graduate program is directed to provide students with a deep and broad knowledge of mathematics sufficient to prepare them for leading roles as educators or researchers. Through our teaching, we intend to provide students with a full appreciation of mathematics, its applications and the nature of high quality mathematics instruction. Our goals are to equip graduates with the tools necessary to fully participate in a technological society and a competitive global environment.

The vision of the CMU Department of Mathematics is to create an integrated teaching, research and outreach unit to enhance the visibility, linkages and impact of mathematics, statistics and mathematics education at Central Michigan University and in the community. Vital core focus areas will be developed, and participation in innovative (including multidisciplinary) collaborations will be encouraged.
The department will maintain broad strength in mathematics, statistics and mathematics education. Strengthening connections between areas will provide the foundations that underlie scientific principles and help prepare students to function and flourish in an increasingly technological society.
