​​​Astronomy telescopeThe department of Physics at CMU is one of the most research active departments at CMU. With 13 tenured and tenure-track faculty members, the department published over 40 peer-reviewed articles in 2015, an impressive 10% of all of CMU publications indexed by Web of Knowledge. As of January 2016, the department has 12 active external grants from federal agencies, totaling about 2.5 million dollars distributed among 4 National Science Foundation grants, 6 U. S. Department of Energy grants, and 2 
U. S. Department of Defense grants.


Physics faculty members pursue state-of-the-art research in several areas including:
