Undergraduate Programs

​​​​​​Students conducting experiment in physics labCMU offers a rigorous physics program that promotes thoughtful inquiry and prepares you well for graduate studies or a physics-related career. A degree in physics or astronomy may qualify you for a wide range of positions related to different areas such as engineering, mathematics, computer science and environmental science; and for those with the appropriate background, some nonscience fields as well, such as finance.

As an undergraduate, you'll learn from our excellent faculty and find the equipment, facilities and resources you need to dig into the scientific and technological work that will help prepare you for your future.

Choose from majors in:

Physics (B.A., B.S.)

Prospective majors are urged to begin the study of mathematics in the fall of the freshman year with MTH 132 (or MTH 130, if necessary) and their study of physics in the winter of the freshman year with PHY 145 and 175.

Minimum total for graduation:
124 hours

Physics: Astronomy Concentration (B.A., B.S.)

This option is available within the physics major for students with a particular interest in astronomy or astrophysics. The program provides the background desired by most astronomy graduate programs.

B.S. in Education, Secondary Provisional Certification

Completion of this degree will qualify you for recommendation to the Michigan State Board of Education for a Secondary Provisional Certificate, which will permit you to teach the major and minor in the secondary grades.

Minor: Required
Minimum total for graduation: 124-161 hours

B.S. in Education, Secondary Provisional Certification: MLE Option

If you choose this degree, you must select the Middle Level Education minor in addition to your curriculum area major and minor. You must select two curriculum areas which are broad and multidisciplinary, and encompass the major areas within those fields.

Minor: 1 Required, plus the Middle Level Education minor
Minimum total for graduation: 124-161 hours
