Student’s Name: Deana Lalonde
Hometown: Sault
Ste. Marie, MI
Bio: I am a current student at Central
Michigan University pursuing a bachelor degree in Fashion Design. I
really enjoy drawing, creating fashion illustrations, and designing new
collections. I am also proficient in flat-pattern making, draping,
and CAD design. I have a strong interest in pursuing a career in the
fashion industry as an apparel designer. By pursuing a career as an
apparel designer, I will be able to influence new styles and trends that can
impact the lives around me. I will be graduating in December 2020
with a major in Fashion Design and a minor in Visual Merchandising.
Inspiration: I was inspired by bright, vibrant
colors seen towards the end of spring and beginning of summer. When designing
this print, I envisioned the design to present a fun & playful aesthetic.
2nd Place
Student’s Name: Joshua Golden
Hometown: Lansing,
MI
Bio:
Josh Golden is a Lansing native and is a Senior at Central Michigan University
majoring in Fashion Merchandising and Design (Design Concentration) with a
minor in Art. He currently works as a research/lab assistant at CMU’s Center
for Merchandising and Design Technology where he gains hands-on experience
using state-of-the-art textile testing machinery. Moreover, he attended a
Product Development job shadow at Target INC’s global headquarters last
November and is an incoming Global Apparel Technical Development intern with
Nike INC this Summer/ With interests in technical design, product development,
textile science, and CAD, he strives to holistically understand and disrupt the
tremendous amount of over-stimulation and pollution that plagues his generation.
Josh would like to thank Art Van for this opportunity, his Design professor Dr.
Su Kyoung An for her constant support and inspiration, and his Art History
Professor Dr. Rachel Barron-Duncan for her constant enthusiasm and mini
lectures in her office hours that helped inspire this design.
Inspiration: “Klimt
x Golden 2020” was inspired by Gustav Klimt’s 1903 masterpiece “Portrait of
Adele Bloch-Bauer I.” Josh has always been inspired by the symbolist art
movement and its emphasis on decadence and emotion, Klimt’s previous work, and
the painting’s heartbreaking origin story. Klimt was not an artist to shy away
from expense, and this artwork is adorned with real precious gemstones hammered
into solid gold leaf. Josh wanted his chair to look (and feel luxurious) while
personifying the ‘Golden’ element of his name. This chair features faux crystal
acrylic legs, digitally printed water-resistant suede, and an accent throw
pillow adorned with Adele’s original portrait.
