Geoffrey Sykes

There's more to fashion merchandising and design at CMU than what might meet the stereotypical eye. So says Geoffrey Sykes, a senior with a design concentration. "It's hard work," he says. "There's more math than you would think and a lot of thought that goes into good designs."

From nearby St. John's, Geoffrey says CMU always loomed as a possibility. A closer look revealed a strong industry connection where students have helped design uniforms for professional hockey and baseball teams. That hit home with him.

Sports minded. Throughout his undergraduate days, Geoffrey has played around in Illustrator, creating new looks for the fields of play. "I would love to do team branding and design, incorporating new logos and developing looks for sports teams," he says.

More than a hound dog. Geoffrey looked to an uncle's hunting dog — more of a stay-at-home hound, really — for inspiration for the Denali Design-A-Throw Competition. Challenged to incorporate a hunting or nautical theme, Sykes took home a $500 second-place prize for "Hunting Companion."

Show me the Moneyball. Geoffrey hopes this summer's internship with Moneyball Sportswear in Lansing will put him on course for his big league dreams. "They're looking for design minds," says Geoffrey, who plans on graduating in December 2014 with a double major in sports management.
