Students will provide direct services to children in Oaxaca under the supervision
of CMU faculty members. Students will work in an albergue (children's shelter) or
in an after school program for children in a neighborhood center. Service will include
both planning educational activities and direct care for children. Students also
volunteer to help with physical improvements (e.g., painting, gardening) of the facilities
that provide services to children.
In addition to large group field trips to cultural sites within the region, specialized
local small group trips are coordinated to show interested students how services are
provided to children in different settings. Working group meetings and periodic
classroom discussions will be used to prepare for service and teaching activities and to
process students' learning experiences. Students will also have ample free time to
explore the vibrant cultural life of downtown Oaxaca City in the blocks surrounding the
group's lodging--designated by UNESCO for preservation as a "World Heritage" site for
cultural richness and history.
