​Students may choose from three program options: Plan A--Thesis Option, Plan B--Internship Option or Plan C--Course Work Option. 

Plan A--Thesis Option​

FNS 677 (3) Nutritional Epidemiology

FNS 798 (6) Thesis (please contact program director early in program to discuss timeline for completion) Permission to be hand-registered is required.

The Plan A also includes:
1. E-portfolio
2. 6 hours of electives selected with the approval of the student's advisor.
3. An oral examination on the thesis topic.

FNS 799 (3) FNS 799 must be taken in a student's final semester, as the only course in that semester. All students must take FNS 678 Research Methods in Nutrition prior to enrollment in FNS 799. Permission to be hand-registered is required. Important: Please see FNS 799/CBE policy (effective July 2017) included at the bottom of this page. 

The Plan B also includes:
1. E-portfolio
2. 3 hours of electives selected with the approval of the student's advisor.
3. An oral examination over course work completed as part of FNS 799 course requirements.

*CMU’s dietetic internship requirements may not be completed on-line or "at a distance".  Information on CMU's dietetic internship program is available here​

In some cases, twelve credits may be earned through examination to substitute for prior dietetic internship experience. Students must be eligible and must pass the examination to earn twelve credits. Contact Candace Maylee at mayle1ce@cmich.edu or 989-774-2613 for the policy on Credit by Examination (CBE) for Dietetic Internship Experience. NOTE:  Internship exams must be completed and pass prior to registering for FNS 799.

Plan B Internship Option total: 37 credit hours​

FNS 799 (3) FNS 799 must be taken in a student's final semester, as the only course in that semester. All students must take FNS 678 Research Methods in Nutrition prior to enrollment in FNS 799. Permission to be hand-registered is required.

The Plan C also includes:
1. E-portfolio
2. An oral examination over all course work, completed as part of FNS 799 course requirements, and 9 additional hours of electives selected with the approval of the student's academic advisor.

*Students must enroll in this 1 credit hour course three different times under different subject themes when completing the Course Work Option.​

Plan C Course Work Option total: 33 credit hours​

Which is best for me: Plan A, Plan B, or Plan C?
For students planning to continue their graduate education and pursue a doctoral degree, Plan A is recommended. For students who do not plan to pursue a doctoral degree, either Plan A, Plan B, or Plan C would be recommended.​

FNS 799 Policy Updated (Effective July 2017)

Registration for FNS 799 (Capstone in Nutrition and Dietetics) requires permission.  Students should contact Candace Maylee at mayle1ce@cmich.edu on the first day of course registration.

Mandatory requirements for students planning to enroll in FNS 799 for the Spring semester include:

  • successful completion of all credit by examination/CBE no later than September 30 of the year prior to when the student plans to complete FNS 799 (ex:  September 30, 2017 to take FNS 799 in Spring 2018).
  • successful completion of all other coursework on the student’s program plan OR current enrollment in any remaining coursework requirements

Students will not be added to FNS 799 after October 31.

Mandatory requirements for students planning to enroll in FNS 799 for the Fall semester include:

  • successful completion of all credit by examination/CBE no later than February 28 of the year in which the student plans to complete FNS 799 (ex:  February 28, 2018 to take FNS 799 in Fall 2018).
  • successful completion of all other coursework on the student’s program plan OR current enrollment in any remaining coursework requirements

Students will not be added to FNS 799 after March 31.
