The Ireland Summer Experience will
begin and end on campus at CMU where secondary students will start and complete their
coursework for EDU 310 and EDU 325. Elementary students will complete their coursework in EDU 361, EDU 433, and EDU 495. In between, during mid-May 2014, the group
will travel to Dublin where students will be placed in area secondary schools
to observe teaching and participate in classroom activities. After Dublin, the group will travel to County
Clare in Western Ireland for three days. In County Clare, students will visit rural
schools while enjoying the stunning, rugged countryside.
The Ireland Summer Experience
offers several unique advantages for students in addition to the chance to gain
a global perspective. Participation in
the program allows students to complete two required TEPD courses over the
summer – two classes typically offered only during the school year. Dr. Larry Corbett and Dr. Shane Cavanaugh will work together to coordinate and compliment the curriculum
of the secondary courses. Dr. Kristina Rouech and Dr. Ray Francis will coordinate the elementary pre-student teaching experience. The additional classroom field experience, not normally a part
of the secondary program, will give students a chance to observe the theory and
methods discussed in the EDU 310 and EDU 325 courses.
Overall, the Ireland Summer program
will be a uniquely meaningful learning experience for all participants.
When in the Dublin area, students will stay with host families in Dun Laoghaire. a seaside suburban town about 8 miles outside of Dublin's city center. Dublin, and everything it has to offer, is just an easy 20-minute train ride from Dun Laoghaire. This home stay includes
all meals and provides students with a unique cultural
