Fall 2018 begins my first year teaching at the CMU Child Development and Learning Lab. I have been teaching or coaching preschool teachers in early childhood settings since receiving my Bachelor of Science in Child Development with an emphasis in Early Childhood in 2011. I have been fortunate enough to visit and observe at the schools near Reggio, Italy and I am a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children. I have a passion for educating both children and adults, adventure and exploration, traveling, and the outdoors. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, friends, and dogs. I also enjoy trying new things, experiencing new cultures and languages, and finding new ways to connect with nature.

I am a proud to be a CMU alumni where I received my degree in Early Childhood Education.  I started working at CMU in 2001. Since then I have had the pleasure of working with an amazing variety of CMU students, families, children and co-workers.  While I enjoy every aspect of working with children, I do have a special interest in the arts.  I have been privileged to have had the opportunity to visit Reggio and Reggio inspired schools in Italy, focusing on the arts.  I have also attended Two National Art Educators Association conferences in the U.S.   I am honored to be working at a school that supports and highly values the importance of art in early childhood.  When not at work I enjoy spending time with my family. My husband Mark, three adult daughters and granddaughter Alexandra, a CDLL alumni who still enjoys being able to occasionally come to school with me.

Hello! I am looking forward to a great year with you! I currently serve as the faculty director of the CDLL. My background includes working with young children in inclusive settings, collaborating with families, and supporting pre-service teachers. I was a teacher and an administrator in the Human Growth and Development Lab here at CMU. I am also a proud CMU alum. I enjoy teaching courses in Human Development and Special Education focusing on the overview of child development, family studies, special needs, diversity in the classroom, and issues in early childhood special education. My research focuses on the development of humor in children, workplace climates, inclusive practices, leadership, and pre-service teacher professional development. I am excited to work with your family in the CDLL!

Hello, My name is Nathan Jonaitis (most people call me Nate) and I am a two time alumnus of Central Michigan University.  I have a Bachelors in Early Childhood Development as well as a Masters Degree in Educational Technology. I am a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the North American Reggio Emilia Alliance and the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). I am very passionate about the age group that I work with and truly believe in the importance of what I am doing.  I am kind of on both ends of the spectrum as I love being outside and in nature with the children but I also like to work with technology with the children. Another thing I enjoy is building with the children. I love the excitement and wonder that children bring everyday and am passionate about learning along with them. I live just outside of town and enjoy being in the country but still close to town...the best of both worlds.  I live with my wonderful family that includes my wife, who is also a preschool teacher, my nine year old son and my one year old daughter. We enjoy attending CMU sporting events, outdoor activities, attending community events and just about anything as a family. An interesting fact is that I do the polar plunge every year (for the last 12 years) to raise money for Special Olympics Michigan.

I am a graduate of CMU with a B.A.A degree in Child Development and Psychology.  I went on to receive an Elementary Education Certification in 2006.   I worked as an Early Head Start Home Visitor for three years before having my first child.  I chose to leave my job and stay home with my daughter.  I had another child in 2012.  I very much enjoyed spending time as a stay at home mom.  I was offered the opportunity to work at the CDLL in October of 2014.  I decided it would be an amazing opportunity, so I joined the workforce once again as an Assistant Teacher.  When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my family at home or traveling.

Hello! My name is Jomontae Wheeler and I am 24 years old. I am a recent graduate from CMU with my Bachelors degree in Early Childhood Development and Learning. I was born and raised in Flint, MI where I grew up with my grandmother having a in-home Daycare for most of my upbringing. This is where I first picked up my passion for working with young children. From then, I worked hard and have chosen a career path that I know I can make a difference with. A famous quote says, “If you love what you do, then it’ll never be work”. This is how I feel working with young children everyday and I hope to inspire as many minds as possible as an Early Childhood Educator.
