I love to travel and read. Spending time and laughing with my family and friends makes me happy. I am married and have three daughters and two cats. This is my 11th year at CMU and I enjoy my job. Some of the best parts include working with the CMU students, watching the children grow and communicating with the families. I also couldn't ask for a better group of Colleagues to work with! I truly believe the early childhood field is the best place to be.

I am a CMU Alumni with a degree in Child Development and a background in Early Childhood and family support. Outside of the lab I spend my time with my four children and my husband. I have been on the CDLL Team since July 2009 and love coming to work every day with the CDLL Families and CMU HDF Students.

Mya Gilmore
Front Desk/Dining Room

I hope you enjoy this poem and learn a little bit about me,
My name is Mya and I'm a junior at Central Michigan University.
I work in the CDLL either at the front desk or in the kitchen,
My goal here is to help out and be a positive role model to the children.
Gaining new experiences, learning, and exploring the world is what I favor,
Which is why I love to travel and I'm a Cultural and Global Studies major.
My minor is Sociology with a concentration in Youth Studies,
I'm from Mt. Pleasant and passionate about helping Michigan's communities.
I'm a member of many programs through the Volunteer Center here at CMU;
Lunch Buddies, Conversation Partners, and Alternative Breaks to name a few.
I'm compassionate towards the environment, animals, and humans,
So I'm friendly, I recycle, and I'm a proud vegetarian.
At 5 years old you'd find me drawing, dancing, or playing with a Barbie,
Enjoying nature by being outdoors is what I do for fun now that I'm 20.
Here teachers, students, families, and children all learning together is what you'll find,
And I'm honored to be part of this preschool, it is truly one-of-a-kind.
If I see you everyday at the CDLL, or it's your first time walking through,
I'm the really short girl with curly hair and I'd love to get to know you!

I have been working at CMU for twelve years, nine of them at the Child Development and Learning Lab.  I first started out as an Office Professional and then became a Lead Teacher after I graduated in 2007 with an Elementary Education degree, minoring in Early Childhood. Because of my interest and passion in education, I continued on, graduating in 2010 with a Masters in Guidance and Development.  I am currently a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children, North American Reggio Emilia Alliance, Michigan Inspirations and participate in the local MPAEYC chapter as their President-Elect.  I am also a co-advisor of the Student Association for the Education of Young Children’s group on campus.  As I continue to grow as a professional, I find that I am more and more inspired by the work that the people in Reggio Emilia are doing with young children, as well as the Constructivist approach.  I live in Mt. Pleasant and love everything it offers.  My husband Scott and our children, Justin and Elliana, enjoy the parks, going for walks, movies, and having the opportunity to go to different events CMU offers.

I am an alumnus of Central Michigan University and have a Bachelors in Early Childhood Development.  I am currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Educational Technology.  I am a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) as well as our local chapter, MPAEYC.  I am also a member of the North American Reggio Emilia Alliance.  I live a few miles outside of town and really enjoy the area. I have a remarkable six year old boy who I completely adore and the most amazing fiancee who I will marry at the end of this year.  I enjoy any activity with my family and we like to be outside a lot.  I enjoy being involved with my community and enjoy attending all different kinds of events that our community offers.  I also enjoyed Polar Plunging into Rose Pond every February to raise money for Special Olympics Michigan, but since they moved it to a pool I know jump in a frozen pond in Traverse City.

Mt. Pleasant has been my home for the past 41 years.  My husband and I enjoyed raising our three sons in the atmosphere of a small town, different from our home town of Jackson.   Graduating from Central Michigan University, I received degrees in secondary education and early childhood.  I have worked in the early childhood field for twenty-four years.  Professionally I participate at the national, state, and local levels of the National Association for the Education of Young Children and participate at other conferences throughout the United States.  Several trips to early childhood conferences in Reggio Emelia, Italy, have been a highlight of my professional development.   My favorite pastime is being outdoors, walking, biking, and playing ball with my grandson, Evan.

I have lived in Mt. Pleasant for over 30 years.  My husband and I live out in the country on five acres.  Our daughter attends CMU and our son lives in Lansing.  I graduated from CMU in 1996 with a degree in Child Development.  I worked with the Head Start program for 22 years before becoming a member of the CDLL teaching team in 2010.  I am an active member of several nationally recognized early childhood organizations.  Exploring and practicing the Reggio Inspired approach with young children is a deeply felt passion in my life.  When I am not with the CDLL, I like to stay active by practicing yoga, exploring nature, traveling, reading, listening to music and sharing these activities with my family and friends.  I look forward, with joy, to continuing my work with the Child Development and Learning Lab.
