Susanne is the Coordinator for the CMDT Research Lab. She facilities projects and contracts with
internal and external customers who have need of testing with our state of the
art equipment. Sue works with the
multidisciplinary team to develop testing protocols and ensure we are meeting
the customer’s needs. Though her
undergraduate degree was in Plastic Engineering, she is currently working on
her Master’s thesis in Apparel Product Development and Merchandising Design.
The research project, which was sponsored in part by Spectrum Health
Innovations focuses on the bra fit and style preferences of female breast
cancer survivors who have undergone mastectomy with prosthetic
reconstruction. Graduation is expected
in May 2019.
Outside her work at CMU, Sue has partnered with two other
women to develop a business that focuses on meeting the bra needs of this
group, named Elemental. Using the functional design process and skills developed through the
APDMT program and CMDT lab they have been able to design a bra that keeps cold
breasts warm. The three women intend to
launch sales of their product in October of 2018.
