Dr. Terry Lerch is a professor in the School of Engineering
and Technology at Central Michigan University. His engineering background was a
key component to the development of the Center for Merchandising and Design
Technology (CMDT) and its multidisciplinary team of researchers. Their work has
included studies for national basketball, hockey and baseball teams as well as
hospitals, bedding manufacturers, automotive and other companies designing and
evaluating functional apparel and textiles. He has developed unique and
innovative measurement techniques used in the evaluation of material properties
of textile products and processes.
Acquiring technology through collaborative grant writing with the team
has brought a body scanner, infra-red thermography, a transgendered thermal
manikin, a sweating guarded hot plate and other technologies to the innovation
laboratory. Dr. Lerch enjoys helping
bridge the technology gap between industry and the university and involving
students in the process of helping students solve real world problems.
