The Michigan Geographic Alliance (MGA) is part of the National Geographic Society's national network of geographic alliances. There are 54 local, state and international alliances, from California to Maine, and Canada to Puerto Rico.
Formed in 1989 by Dr. Michael Libbee from Central Michigan University, and Dr. Joseph Stoltman of Western Michigan University, the MGA has been headquartered in the Department of Geography at Central Michigan University since its inception. Supported by initial funding from the National Geographic Education Foundation, the State of Michigan and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the MGA has operated for almost 30 years with continued support from the Connie Binsfeld Endowment in Geographic Education.
During its history the MGA has:
- Raised $7,000,000 for Geographic Education in Michigan
- Trained over 300 teachers, including teachers from the Dominican Republic and Ireland, to work on curriculum and present workshops. Many of these are now active teacher consultants of the MGA!
- Offered over 7,000 hours of professional development to 70,000 teachers
- Produced and distributed lesson plans, maps, posters, and digital resources to teachers across the state and nation
