Prepare for a successful career in a geography-related field through the programs and experiences offered by the CMU Department of Geography & Environmental Studies.

Geography-related careers include everything from teaching geography at an elementary school to using geographic information system software to analyze a regional floodplain or map a land development project.

CMU offers a prominent geography program with an emphasis on geospatial technology, environmental analysis and planning, and global studies. Gain the knowledge and skills that will help you enter a geography-related position.

Undergraduate Programs in Geography

A master's degree program in geographic information sciences also is offered, providing advanced course work and applied research in cartography, geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing. There is also a graduate certificate in data mining program as well. ​

The department also advises teaching and non-teaching Interdisciplinary majors and minors in Earth Science.

Geography and earth science majors are required to take courses which cover the basic content, concepts, and techniques of the disciplines. Elective hours should be selected in consultation with an advisor. You should consult with a departmental advisor early in your career at CMU.
