Advisors for new Graduate Students in Ph.D. and M.S. Programs
Each new graduate student is assigned a faculty advisor when s/he is admitted to the program. It is important that each student make appointments to meet with her/his faculty advisor to plan the course work when arriving at CMU and during the beginning of each fall semester.
Dissertation Advisor(s) for Ph.D. Students
Once a Ph.D. student passes all qualifying exams, the student begins to look for her/his dissertation advisor. Within one year of passing the qualifying exams, the student must identify her/his dissertation advisor(s). The faculty advisor of the student will be switched to the dissertation advisor(s).
Advisor for Plan B Project for M.S. Students
An M.S. student should begin looking for an internship/practicum or consider taking a Plan B project no later than three semesters into the program. If the student is able to secure an internship, the field supervisor will become his/her field advisor, and the faculty internship coordinator or department Chairperson will serve as the faculty advisor for the student. If the student decides to take a Plan B project with a faculty, then, the faculty will be the student’s new advisor.
