CMU's Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry is primarily housed in The Dow Science Complex, which is a 60,000 square foot facility that was built in 1991. The Dow Science Complex has lecture halls, active learning classrooms, introductory and advanced-level teaching laboratories, 20 faculty research laboratories, and major instrumentation including facilities for NMR, mass spectrometry, and materials characterization.

Our biochemistry & chemical biology faculty are housed CMU's Biosciences Building, which is a 169,000 square foot facility that was completed in 2016 with a budget of $95 million. Consisting mainly of research laboratories, the Biosciences Building has spacious open-concept labs with segregated desks for student researchers, core facilities for confocal & electron microscopy and flow cytometry, and specialty labs for synthetic chemistry and work with pathogenic organisms and radioisotopes. Combined, our outstanding facilities support a breadth of research areas that serve to train students while solving important problems facing society.

Our undergraduate degree programs are approved by the American Chemical Society (ACS). ACS-approved programs provide rigorous and broad-based education in chemistry and biochemistry, and furthermore indicate that our programs have outstanding faculty, facilities, and curriculum. The culmination of our undergraduate students' education is a thesis-based faculty-mentored capstone research project—the only one of its kind among CMU's 15 public universities.

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry is also involved in several graduate programs, including specialized Ph.D. degree programs in advanced materials and biochemistry, cell, and molecular biology (BCMB) and Masters degree programs in chemistry, teaching college chemistry, and BCMB.

Graduates of CMU's undergraduate and graduate programs are sought after by industrial corporations, Ph.D.-granting institutions, and professional schools. We maintain strong ties to local industry, such as The Dow Chemical Company and Dow Corning Corporation, which are only minutes from Mount Pleasant.
