Fall 2020: Next steps

We are excited to welcome you to CMU this fall. The coronavirus has impacted all of our daily lives, and has changed how the university conducts operations. As you and your family make this important academic and social transition, we are committed to providing the same high standard of support and service that you expect of us.

You will find below the most recent updates to how we are striving to make that transition easier.

Fall semester dates changed

As announced on June 1, classes for the fall 2020 semester will begin Monday, Aug. 17, and end Wednesday, Nov. 25. The August start is two weeks earlier than had been originally planned. The schedule adjustment means students will not return after the Thanksgiving holiday, Nov. 26, thus reducing the risk of COVID-19 transmission on campus following holiday travel.

Fall 2020 Semester Schedule

General information about the fall semester can be found in the fall schedule Q&A.

Student studying in classroom

Attend classes online or in person

CMU’s hybrid-flexible, or HyFlex, course model for the fall 2020 semester allows students to attend classes in person or through real-time remote access. This may be especially important for students whose work situations or fall leases prevent them from being on campus the first two weeks of the semester. Contact your instructors for information.

International student studying

International student visas

Some international students may be unable to secure a student visa in time for the start of the fall semester. The university is working to create options for incoming international students and will share information as it becomes available. New or continuing international students with questions or concerns regarding their arrival or enrollment for the fall semester should contact the Office of Global Engagement.

Future Students 2021+

Looking to begin your educational journey at Central Michigan University in 2021? While the world may be changing all around you, one thing remains certain: We are committed to doing what we can do for you.

We will begin accepting applications for fall 2021 on August 1, 2020.

How to Apply

We understand that high schools, community colleges and the ACT/SAT have been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. CMU has implemented changes and accommodations to facilitate the admissions process.

  • 1

    Step 1. Submit your application

We are accepting and processing applications for spring 2021. The summer/fall 2021 application opens August 1, 2020. Freshman applicants can also use the Common Application beginning August 1.

    Apply Now

  • 2

Step 2. Pay the application fee

The application fee can be paid when you submit your application online. The fee is required to process your application. Financial waivers are available for those who are unable to pay the application fee. You may request a waiver by calling 989-774-3076 or emailing cmuadmit@cmich.edu.

  • 3

Step 3: Submit your transcript. Know how we look at it.

We know that schools across the country have closed in areas impacted by the pandemic, and some may switch to pass/ fail grades. We review all of the documents you send us to make an admission decision:

    • Transcript.
    • Course schedule.
    • Grades.
    • Your personal statement, should you have extenuating circumstances.

If you are unable to request or obtain official copies of your academic record, you may submit scanned copies or screenshots of any academic records you have access to by emailing them to transcripts@cmich.edu. The Admissions processing team is approaching this situation holistically. We will make a provisional admissions decision in instances where there is enough of an academic record. Anyone who is provisionally admitted using unofficial academic records will be required to submit official records prior to their second semester of enrollment.

  • 4

Step 4: SAT/ACT Test Optional for Domestic Freshmen for 2021

CMU will be test-optional for all 2021 terms. Test-optional means it is not mandatory for you to submit an SAT or ACT score as part of your application.

When you apply, you will be asked if you would like to have your test scores considered in admission/scholarship decisions.

    1. If you elect to not include your test score in the admission /scholarship decision, you may request a second review once you have a test score.
    2. If you elect to have your test score considered for admission and scholarships, you will not be able to later request that the score not be considered.

CMU does not require additional materials such as a résumé or essay for a complete application, but you may submit either.

Maroon and Gold Merit Recognition Scholarships

We know paying for college is still one of your top concerns. We are doing what we can do by continuing to offer our Maroon and Gold Merit Recognition Scholarships.

Incoming freshmen who apply to CMU are automatically considered for awards up to 75% off of tuition for four years. For 2021 applicants, there will be two matrices — one for those who choose to have their GPA and test scores considered, and one for those with GPA only.
