Lance Hay Jr.

Marketing Major

Hometown: Shelby Township, Mich.

Meet Lance, a marketing major who serves as an advertising representative for Central Michigan Life — CMU’s student-run newspaper published three days a week. Lance began his journey with CM Life in the summer of 2013, where he currently works with local businesses to sell advertisement space in each publication to cover the funding of the paper.

Lance says his first meeting with a client did not go well, but through the growth he received at CM Life with his coworkers, he’s become very comfortable in his work. “The first time, it was hard for me to process what I learned in training and make that conversation. After a while, I found my routine and added my own personality to it so that it’s no longer me pitching something to them. We’re having a conversation.”

Making the call. “It’s like having a job. I’m here between classes checking my email and talking to a few of my clients. I’m usually in the office between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., so it’s pretty much a full-time commitment.”

Building relationships. “Our staff is the best part. When you think about working from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., it might sound terrible. But when our staff comes in, it’s fun. We laugh, we joke, but at the same time we work hard. It’s a great atmosphere to be a part of.”

Finding your story. “When you hear sales or advertising sales, there’s a stigma to it. Working at CM Life has given me a different outlook on the field. I look at it now and say ‘This is something I could want to do for the rest of my life.’”
