Majors in psychology and sociology
with a criminal justice concentration
What are you doing this summer?
I am an intern at Glebe Youth Service, a nonprofit organization that is located in an Aborigine suburb of Sydney, Australia. The organization works with families in the community to help them overcome being disadvantaged. They partner with many other organizations and companies like the police, the Juvenile Justice Department, the Juvenile Health Service Department and the school systems to ensure the families have a better future and a stable support system.
What will you do with Glebe Youth Service?
We put on different fun and educational programs weekly. I also assist the organization by designing and launching a website. Another part of my responsibilities is creating a student handbook for future interns and volunteers.
What do you hope to gain from this experience?
Personally, I hope to gain a cultural balance. I hope to learn the cultural difference between American families and Australian families, mainly the Aboriginal families. I want a perspective on their juvenile justice system so that I can learn the similarities as well as the differences in this system compared to the systems back home. Even though I haven’t been here very long, I’ve already noticed differences.
