“Without Career Services, my career would have turned out much differently,” says Jeremy Stephens, ’95. A human resources major, Jeremy says Career Services helped him land an internship with what would soon become his first employer after college.

In Career Services, Jeremy was a mock interviewer. Now, as the director of human resources at Chelsea Community Hospital, he says he interviews candidates almost daily. Jeremy says he might not be where he is today without the experiences offered by CMU.

“The program at CMU prepares you to be a strong HR generalist,” Jeremy said. “This background allows you to have exposure to all HR areas. This broad background is what separates CMU students in HR from other HR graduates from different schools.”

Jeremy says he continues to work with Career Services, though now he’s graduated from a mock interviewer preparing students for the real world to an employer looking to give students their first shot at postgraduation success. He encourages every CMU student to reap the benefits that Career Services offers the minute they arrive on campus.

“It helps students so much in career preparation,” Jeremy said. “I can always tell if a student has worked with Career Services when I interview them.”

Greg Boehmer graduated from CMU in 2003, but the network he created while pursuing three business majors has stayed with him for more than 10 years.

“My favorite thing about being a student at CMU was all of the wonderful CMU faculty, administrators, staff and students that I met while on campus,” Greg says. “Even 10 years later, I stay in touch with more than 100 of the people from CMU that have made a positive impact on my life.”

Greg says one of the most noteworthy examples of the impact CMU had on his life was landing an internship with Deloitte & Touche LLP the summer he graduated.

“With some good guidance from Ms. Como and others at Career Services, I was well prepared for my office visit at Deloitte where I beat out two students from the University of Michigan for the last open internship slot that upcoming summer,” Greg explained.

Now, as manager at Deloitte & Touche LLP 10 years later, Greg encourages all CMU students to take advantage of the opportunities Career Services offers.

“Unless you and your family are extremely wealthy, the main reason you’re at CMU is to find a job,” Greg said.

“Through mock interviews and résumé critiques, I learned how to properly research companies before my interview, make a high quality professional résumé and handle behavioral questions during an interview,” Greg says. “Career Services is one of the most underutilized resources on CMU’s campus to assist you with finding a job and achieving your goals.”
