Meteorology

Catherine Bodak

“I couldn’t do my job without the weather forecasting skills and understanding of the atmosphere that I gained from the meteorology program at CMU,” says Catherine Bodak, ’10. Catherine is a morning and noon meteorologist for WNEM TV 5. She double majored in meteorology and broadcast & cinematic arts at CMU with a minor in mathematics.

Catherine says the education she received at CMU helped prepare her for her career as a meteorologist, but it also gave her the opportunity to make friends she’ll never forget.

“The people I worked with became a really close group of friends that I will keep in touch with for the rest of my life,” Catherine said.

Derek Van Dam

Derek Van Dam, ’05, is the chief meteorologist and head of weather in Cape Town, South Africa, including television stations eNCA, eTV and eNews Channel Africa. He double majored in meteorology and broadcast & cinematic arts at CMU.

“Having access to advanced technology allowed me to have an advantage in my field,” says Derek. “The practical weather forecasting skills I acquired at CMU helped me adapt to a career in meteorology on another continent.”

Van Dam encourages students interested in meteorology to balance their education with a healthy lifestyle.

“Your education and healthy lifestyle should coexist together,” says Derek. “That and lots of coffee at Kaya Coffee House!”
