Who is eligible for CMU's Summer Extra Credit Program?

  • The award is available to new undergraduate students in their first degree-seeking semester at CMU (new first-year students and transfer students).

What steps do I need to complete to attain the award?

  • Ensure you have completed a FAFSA for the 2019-2020 school year (submission deadline is June 30, 2020) and meet all other Title IV eligibility requirements.  Be sure to indicate CMU as your institution on the form (CMU's FAFSA code is 002243).
  • Meet with your academic advisor to select the appropriate courses based on your academic program. New first-year students should plan to discuss this opportunity during orientation.
  • Enroll in one or more 3-credit courses during the summer sessions.
  • No application is required to be filed to obtain the award.

Taking summer courses allow you to get a head start on your upcoming academic year.
CMU offers many flexible summer session options between May and August. Students should work closely with an academic advisor to ensure they are taking courses that are relevant for their program. Academic advisors can help students navigate the varying dates of summer sessions. CMU's main campus academic calendar and global campus academic calendar are great resources. The course registration system will also list the start and end dates of summer courses.

  • You must file a 2019-2020 FAFSA (submission deadline is June 30, 2020) and indicate CMU as your institution on the form (CMU's FAFSA code is 002243).
  • The CMU employee or other tuition benefits will be used first.
  • The undergraduate extra credit program can be used to bring your balance down to zero.
  • No refund can be generated to students using employer provided tuition benefits.
The CMU Bookstore has access to all course textbooks. Books are also available from many online sources.
Summer housing is available to students taking at least one summer class during each session. Summer housing is available in one premium residence hall and all three of our University Apartments. If you are interested in summer housing, please email reslife@cmich.edu to gain access to the housing application.

Registration Questions

It depends. Students must be admitted and complete their orientation requirement before they can register for courses.
Yes. CMU has courses starting at various times throughout the summer, with the final group set to start on June 29th.
New first-year students will follow the 2019-2020 bulletin for summer 2020. Transfer students should work with their academic advisor to determine the academic bulletin the best aligns with their situation, based on the years they have attended higher education.
If a student drops a course(s) and falls below the thresholds of 6 or 3 credits, then the amount of the award will be reduced.
If CMU cancels a course, reach out to your academic advisor to explore alternative options based on your academic program. If no alternative is available, the CMU summer 2020 award will not be affected. If a student had only registered for one 3-credit course and no replacement is found, the award will be removed from the student account and payments received (if applicable) will be refunded to the student.
There is no requirement to attend CMU in the fall 2020 semester.

Financial Questions

Depending on your scenario (Pell grant, available loans, etc.) this undergraduate summer tuition award may allow you to take courses with no out of pocket costs. Students should work with a Student Service Court advisor to better understand how to leverage all financial aid available during the summer.
As long as you do not enroll at another college or university after graduating from high school, you will be considered a freshman at CMU and you will retain your eligibility for any freshman scholarships that you have been awarded.
No. Financial aid packages for the 2020-2021 school year are available starting in the fall of 2020.

The first summer aid disbursement will occur on May 15th.
Courses enrolled for on or before May 1st will be due June 1st, courses enrolled in after May 1st but before June 1st will be due July 1st and courses enrolled in after June 1st will be due August 1st.
No, not for fall or spring 2020-2021. Summer session is a separate session and does not affect a student's 2020-2021 financial aid package, however it could affect your eligibility for summer 2020 work study funds.

New and Transfer students, who meet the eligibility requirements, and have not been packaged for summer financial aid, will see the Summer Extra Credit Award added to their summer award within 10-14 business days of enrolling in summer courses and filing there 19-20 FAFSA. Students will receive an award to the student’s CMU email, notifying them of the new award.
