How do I pay the $175 enrollment deposit?
A student's enrollment deposit reserves their place as a new CMU student. A student can pay this either online or by mail. Online payments can be made using credit card or electronic check by visiting the New Student Orientation portal.

How do I reserve a date to attend New Student Orientation?
Once CMU has received and processed a students' enrollment deposit, they will be able to reserve their date to attend orientation using CMU's online reservation system. Students will need their CMU Global ID and password to gain access. This reservation process will take you approximately 15-20 minutes to complete.

How do I activate my CMU Global ID and E-Mail account?
Contact CMU’s Help Desk at (989)774-3662 or visit their website for assistance.

When will I receive confirmation of the date I selected to attend orientation?
Once a student completes and submits their online reservation, a confirmation will be sent to their CMU e-mail account listing their orientation date, time, location and parking information. It is recommended students print their confirmation for easy reference.

Why is New Student Orientation mandatory?
Research demonstrates that all students benefit from a formal orientation program. We cover critical information that will contribute to your success as a student. To ensure that all CMU students are aware of registration policies and procedures, students are not allowed to register for classes until they attend an orientation session.

How can I be sure I get the classes I need?
Academic advisors will work individually with each student attending orientation. Students complete the first semester class schedule with classes required on the degree program of choice. Once orientation is complete, all students have access to CMU's registration system and may continue to make changes and adjustments to the schedule created during orientation.

Is
Fire Up Friday the same as Academic Orientation?
No, these programs are different in several ways. Fire Up Friday is an optional program sponsored by the Admissions Office and offers students the opportunity to learn more about Residence Life, New Student Orientation, Academic Advising and other involvement opportunities at CMU. Those who attend Fire Up Friday programs are still required to attend a New Student Orientation.

If I would like to stay overnight in Mt. Pleasant, where would I look for that information?
The City of Mt. Pleasant's website showcases multiple options available. Events and Conference Services at CMU also offers student housing options.

Where can I find parking information?
Parking lots are specific to each scheduled orientation date. Review our campus map to see where lots are located.

Will I be required to take placement tests at orientation?
No. Student's placement scores will be based on their high school performance and ACT scores. A foreign language placement test can be taken if a student intends to continue a language that they have previously taken in high school.

What does the Orientation day look like?
Students will check in from 8-9am in the Bovee University Center. The program begins promptly at 9:15 a.m. Students are expected to attend programming until 5pm. If they cannot commit to this timeframe, then offer to switch orientation dates.

Am I allowed to leave orientation during the session?
No. Students must stay with the Orientation program and their assigned group throughout the entire program. If a student leaves before orientation is concluded, they will be required to attend another session so please plan accordingly.

Who can come with me to orientation?
Family members or guardians are invited to attend a meeting that is held separately from students' orientation. This is an excellent opportunity for family members to ask questions and learn more about your new university. However, due to limited space with the program, it is not possible for friends or significant others to attend.

Can I bring the family pet to orientation?
Service animals are permitted to attend, but pets are not. If a student has an emotional support animal, they will need to make sure to register the animal with Student Disability Services. 989-774-3018 or sds@cmich.edu.

Do students and family members attend meetings together?
No. Sessions are scheduled for the same date, but family and student meetings are held separately in order to address the specific interests and questions of each group.

Will my family members be with me when I schedule classes?
Family members will not be with students when they schedule classes with their academic advising team. At the conclusion of New Student Orientation and throughout the time before classes begin, CMU advisors are available to answer any parent questions regarding classes, academic program requirements, and the registration process.

What should I bring with me?
A valid ID, comfortable clothing, and walking shoes (depending on the Michigan weather that day). Walking to meeting locations will be part of your orientation day. Other than that, just bring any questions you have and a great attitude!
