Employers

The CMU Career Development Center understands that our employer partners are facing significant challenges as a result of the COVID-19 health crisis. We know many of you are facing changes to your daily work, in addition to evolving regulations and financial obligations. We recognize that this may, and likely will, play a role in current and future hiring plans.

Know that: we are here for you every step the way; we are committed to your success and to that of our students; you can lean on us as a resource. A few recommendations as we continue to navigate this time together:

Continue to post available positions to Handshake

  • As always, we encourage you to post all available job and internship opportunities to Handshake. A few things to keep in mind at this time:
    • Students are still looking! We are regularly encouraging our students to visit Handshake for these opportunities.
    • Before posting, consider potential short-term changes to the roles and/or new employee orientation. If at all possible, please avoid posting positions that won't be filled, or are at serious risk of not being filled.
    • It may be beneficial to re-engage with students who did not accept earlier offers or were "close" and are still on your list. Many students have had their positions rescinded and are back on the market.

Consider remote internships

  • We understand that it may not be possible for all employers to shift in-person internships to fully remote. The Career Development Center can assist with this process. If a remote internship is not possible, please consider the following:
    • Defer the start date. A shortened internship can and will still provide our students with an incredible learning opportunity.
    • Consider offering remote work for some period of time, starting work at a physical location later, if possible.
    • If a student is an underclassman, consider extending an internship offer for the following summer or next available opportunity.
    • If the student is graduating, consider offering an interview for a full-time position with your organization.

Engage in virtual info sessions

  • At a time when "building your brand" is critical, and connecting with students may seem more difficult than ever, we encourage you to meet them where they are - online!
    • Virtual info sessions (Zoom, BlueJeans, etc.) prove effective platforms in hosting virtual sessions.
    • We can help promote these opportunities via Handshake, email, social media, etc.
    • Get creative! These sessions can provide general overviews of your organization and available positions, but you may want to consider a topic relative to career-readiness.
      • Examples: Virtual interviewing tips, behavioral interview preparation, networking best practices, crafting an elevator pitch
