I have questions about how COVID-19 might affect my decision to attend or apply to CMU.
Is orientation being impacted or cancelled due to COVID-19?
Two priorities continue to be front and center: supporting student success and keeping our communities healthy and safe. All sessions, through August 6, are now being offered as virtual experiences. Students will receive instructions via their cmich.edu email address.
Why is CMU moving orientation to a virtual format?
Do we have to do the virtual orientation, or can we reschedule for a later date?
We highly encourage you and your student to participate in the virtual session and then come for a campus visit when safe to do so. We are planning special on campus opportunities for students who complete their orientation online.
What does virtual Orientation look like?
We have designed an experience that requires students to log in during an assigned 2-hour block. Students must complete a 30-minute phone or virtual appointment with an academic advisor. Students will receive their 1 on 1 advising appointment time via email. This is a required appointment in order to be able to enroll in classes.
Students and families then have access to a number of self-paced materials. Students will also have the option to meet with others such as Student Mentors, Success Coaches, Financial Consultants, and Career Coaches.
How can I test my device for the virtual orientation?
We ask that you test your device prior to the session to determine if you require any set-up to enable camera and microphone use. Watch a short

What if I lose internet connection during the LIVE session?
Life happens! If your internet comes back on, you can click the link in your email to join the session again. We encourage other members of your household to consider limiting their use of WiFi, as too many uses could impact your connection. If you are unable to reconnect,

Do I need to set up an appointment with an advisor prior to orientation?
We will arrange your half hour advising appointment. It will most likely occur ON your assigned orientation date, but does not need to in order to fulfill your requirement.
Do I need to take placement tests?
No. Placement scores are based on your high school performance and SAT scores. A foreign language placement test can be taken if you plan to continue a language. For more information, ask your advisor.
Where will I get my Central ID card?
Students typically receive their Central ID at New Student Orientation. With the move to a virtual format, students will receive instructions later this summer regarding their Central ID photo submission and distribution process. Thank you for your patience!
Can students and family members attend meetings together?
Students and family members may attend any of the virtual sessions together, but we encourage the student to take responsibility for their learning. Additionally, we have special
sessions on the family members
We registered for Family Orientation. Will my parent or family member be charged a fee?
No, the fee is only applied once a parent or family member attends an in-person orientation.
I’m having trouble accessing the LIVE Orientation page, what do I do?
Check the system requirements and testing information offered in the email you received. Call the CMU Helpdesk (989-774-3662). If still unable to log on, call the Orientation Office
Will I get to see campus prior to fall?
CMU will offer special campus visit opportunities when deemed safe to do so by public health officials. Students are still required to complete their virtual orientation requirements.
Are Marching Band and Music Auditions still happening?
Auditions for the 98th season of the Chippewa Marching Band will take place online. Auditions for incoming non-music majors and minors, either live or via prepared video submission, will be conducted between the last week of May and the first two weeks of June. We ask for your patience while we work out the details. We are preparing revised demonstration videos and will post those soon. In the meantime, the posted materials are still a good guide for your preparation.

Orientation Registration FAQs
How do I pay my enrollment deposit?
An enrollment deposit of $175 reserves your space as a new CMU student. You can be pay this either online or by mail. Online payments can be made using credit card or electronic check by visiting the New Student Orientation portal. After the payment is made, you can complete your academic profile and select an orientation date.
I am having trouble logging in to register.
Make sure you have activated your global ID and password. If it’s not a Global ID issue, record information and call the CMU Helpdesk (989-774-3662.
How do I change my orientation date?
Students can go to the same

Why is Orientation required?
Research demonstrates that all students, even transfer students benefit from a formal orientation program. The University has required the program for quite some time.

What is Campus Life 101?
This is a program with required sessions for all new FR or TR students living on campus. The programs begin on August 28th and the topics covered include campus safety, diversity, and sexual assault prevention.
When will I receive my housing information to sign up for a residence hall?
Students who have paid, or deferred their Enrollment Reservation Deposit, will be sent a virtual guide of housing information to their cmich email within 72 hours. A hard copy will also be sent in the mail.
