On Ocotber 24, 2013 MI GEAR UP Central Michigan had the honor of hosting the annual MI GEAR UP State Meeting. MI GEARU UP staff from each of the 15 public four year institutions were present.
When guests arrived they had a wonderful breakfast provided by Classic Fare Catering. During breakfast Mary Henley, Director of MI GEAR UP gave a brief welcome and overview. An introduction was given by Dr. Traci Guinn, Associate Vice President for Institutional Diversity.Dr. Michael Gealt, Provost, from Central Michigan University addressed GEAR UP success and importance, he referenced videos of GEAR UP Scholars doing well at CMU. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnaAWel3pNk&feature=share
The guest then broke into sessions where they had the choice to pick two of the four different sessions given that day. The sessions were "Building Successful Partnerships", "Next Stop College", "Tower Power", and "Collegiate Reality". These sessions were facilitated by several of the MI GEAR UP staff from different universities.
When workshops ceased the guest then moved to lunch where they join CMU's GEAR UP & 4S Pathways staff in a station driven, interactive reception. This reception is designed to introduce programs to different constitutents on the staff campuses. The final session was "Challenges Entering High School". The meaning of this session was to provide participants the opportunity to explore the successes and issues experienced in serving the MI GEAR UP 9th grade cohort as they enter high school. The event then wrapped up by giving the participants an evlauation and Q&A.
Participants also had the opportunity to take a tour of the Mt. Plaeasnt native american museum the Ziibiwing Center .
