CMU and You Day!

CMU Students "Give Back"

CMU student volunteers came out to work with Flint GEAR UP/College Day students during the October 2, 2010 CMU & You Day. CMU students know the meaning of service and the importance of "giving back." Many of the volunteers are former Flint GEAR UP students who are now on the campus of Central Michigan University (there are twenty Flint students in this picture).
120 students and parents from Northern, Northwestern, Southwestern and The Classical Academy attended a free Central Michigan University football game on Saturday, October 2, 2010, compliments of GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness & Readiness for Undergraduate Programs). GEAR UP, a 10 year partnership between CMU and Flint Community Schools provided students and parents with college preparation workshops, dined in Robinson Residence Hall, toured the campus and attended the CMU vs. Ball State football game.  Despite cold weather, parents and students had a fabulous time. Parents attended a presentation from EduGuide on financial aid, while students participated in a Jeopardy like interactive game that enhanced their knowledge of college preparation. Many of CMU's student volunteers are graduates of Flint Community Schools and are now giving back to the program!

Men About Change

"Men About Change" is a male mentoring program that provides young men at Central Michigan University with the opportunity to enhance their leadership skills as well as obtain professional and academic guidance in order to help them obtain their undergraduate degrees while preparing the to assist other young men to do the same. The program serves to "build men to build men," fostering reciprocity to younger generations.
