A major must be signed by the time you reach 56 credits which is usually by the end of your sophomore year. If you are unable to sign a major by 56 credits due to unmet prerequisites or requirements, you may sign an Intent to Major in the academic department. You can declare your major or minor by scheduling an appointment with a faculty advisor in the department that houses your major or minor.
Steps to Signing Major
- Confirm that your desired major is offered at CMU and find it in your Bulletin. Make sure you are using the correct Bulletin (i.e. If your first year at CMU was Fall 2011 you need to use the 2011-2012 Bulletin).
- At the beginning of the section of the Bulletin where your major is you will find the name and contact information for the academic department your major is housed in.
- Call or stop by the office listed to find your faculty advisor and his/her contact information.
- Schedule an appointment to meet with your faculty advisor or simply go to his/her office hours.
It is strongly recommended that you complete your four year plan with your Pathways academic advisor. Completing your four year plan will prepare you for your meeting with a faculty advisor. You will go into your meeting knowledgable of the signing process and it will be a more expedited experience for you. Schedule your four year planning session today by contacting the Pathways office.
Once your major or minor is signed, the original is sent to the Registrar’s Office so they can check at graduation time to see if you have completed all necessary classes. Be sure to keep a copy of your signed major and minor!
