Alternative Weekends (AWkB) is a program growing in popularity each year. Students travel around Michigan to volunteer with an organization over a weekend. The issues and sites for Alternative Weekends are continually changing.
Sign-ups will open on the following dates for each month's Weekend Breaks:
- Weekends happening in October- Sign-Ups: Wednesday, September 27th, 2017
- Weekends happening in November- Sign-Ups: Wednesday, October 18th, 2017
- Weekends happening in December- Sign-Ups: Wednesday, November 15th, 2017
Sign-ups happen on the Mary Ellen Brandell Volunteer Center OrgSync portal at 7:30am.

10/6-10/8: State Parks and Preservation
10/20-10/22: Nature Conservation
11/3-11/5: Survivors of Aggression
11/3-11/5: America's Heroes
11/10-11/12: Youth Advocacy
11/10-11/12: Hunger and Homelessness
12/1-12/3: Food Justice
After signing-up for a break, site leaders will contact you with information about where the break will be serving and further details including setting up one group meeting time before the Alternative Weekend.
Weekends are charged a flat rate of $40, which includes meals, housing, service site fees, van rentals, gas, and a t-shirt.
Annual CMU Danielle Gucciardo Alternative Weekend
The Danielle Gucciardo Alternative Weekend was named in honor of a CMU student who was heavily involved with the Alternative Breaks program and also served as the Weekends Chairperson. After graduation, Gucciardo passed away in the spring of 2013 while serving with the Peace Corps.
