Convenience Fee Q & A

What credit cards does CMU accept?

CMU accepts MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. Credit card payments can only be made online via Quikpay or via the self service kiosks located in the Student Service Court in the University Center Room 119 and cannot be made over the phone, by mail or by email.

Why doesn’t CMU accept Visa?

Central Michigan University’s current practice is to charge a pro-rata convenience fee. Visa only allows a flat fee but not a pro-rata convenience fee. Visa’s flat fee method would require the same flat fee charge regardless of the dollar amount of the transaction. The current pro-rata method allows CMU to recover its cost of doing business while those customers who choose to pay with a credit card share this expense at an equal rate. Visa’s method of charging a convenience fee would disadvantage many credit card customers.

Why is CMU charging a fee for the use of my credit card?

CMU is committed to providing students and their families a range of options for paying their educational expenses. The credit card payment method is becoming prohibitively expensive because of the fees to CMU for credit card transaction processing. This expense is paid by University tuition revenues and therefore reduces the tuition dollars available for academic programs and services for all students. Therefore, a convenience fee on credit card transactions in the amount of 2.75% of the student’s total bill will be charged by a third party company. This will provide nearly $1,000,000 in annual savings for the University.

Why is the convenience fee 2.75%? How was that percentage established?

2.75% is the amount established by our third party credit card processor, Nelnet Business Solutions, to cover the credit card transaction fees assessed by credit card companies.

Is there any way I can avoid paying a convenience fee?

You can avoid paying the 2.75% convenience fee by paying online with an eCheck, an electronic debit to your checking or savings account. You may also mail or deliver a check to the Student Account Services and University Office with no convenience fee to the address below. Please be sure to include your campus ID number on the check. For mailed payments, please allow 7-10 business days for mailing and processing.

Can I make a credit card payment over the phone?

Credit card payments cannot be made over the phone or via mail. This is a security measure to ensure confidentiality of your payment information.

Can I pay in person using a credit card?

Credit card payments can be made at the Student Service Court in the Bovee University Center, room 119 using the self service kiosks. The convenience fee still applies for payments made using the self service kiosks.

Often I receive checks from my credit card company. Can I use the routing number and account number on these checks to make an electronic check (eCheck) payment?

No. Credit card companies will not honor checks used electronically. The payment will be returned as “account not found”. You may use these checks through the mail or in person only. Send mail payments to the address below. Please be sure to include your campus ID number on the check. For mailed payments, please allow 7-10 business days for mailing and processing.

If I make a credit card payment in error will my convenience fee be refunded?

No. The convenience fee is not refundable, even if the payment to which it relates is cancelled, refunded, credited or charged back.

If I use my debit card to pay my student account charges, will I be charged the convenience fee?

Yes. If you use your debit card like a credit card to pay your student account charges, you will be charged the 2.75% convenience fee. For checking or savings account debits, please use the e-check option to avoid paying the convenience fee.

Will the convenience fee that I am charged be included on my student account breakdown and statement?

No. The convenience fee is a fee assessed by a third party company, Nelnet Business Solutions, in addition to the payment for on campus students. The convenience fee will not appear on your student account or on your statement. You will receive two separate receipts, one for the student account payment and the other for the convenience fee. You may view/print these receipts at any time by clicking on the "Transaction History" link in QuikPAY.

How will this appear on my credit card statement?

Two separate transactions will appear on your credit card statement. One transaction for the student account payment and one transaction for the convenience fee. The transaction for the student account payment will appear as “CMU University Billing” and the transaction for the convenience fee will appear as “CMU Univ Bill Svc Fee”.

Are other Universities charging a convenience fee for credit card transactions?

Yes. Credit card convenience fees are not unique to CMU. Many other schools such as Michigan State, Wayne State, Eastern Michigan, Saginaw Valley, and Grand Valley currently charge convenience fees for credit card transactions.

Why are Global Campus students not being charged the convenience fee?

The Global Campus division of CMU has made the decision to absorb the convenience fee cost rather than pass it on to Global Campus students.

If I am an on campus student taking off campus courses, will the convenience fee of 2.75% still apply?

Yes.  The convenience fee applies to all on campus students regardless of the courses that they are enrolled in.  If you are admitted to CMU as an on campus student, the convenience fee will apply.  If you are admitted to CMU as an off campus student, the convenience fee will not apply.
