Performance Management


Performance Planning is a partnership. Learn how to develop SMART goals, deliver effective feedback, focus on career development for yourself and your staff and utilize the CMU Performance Management process.


Service Excellence


Care, Knowledge, Availability, Follow-Through. These service standards and CMU's long tradition of service excellence are reinforced at this workshop. Also learn how to deal with difficult people and difficult situations.


Strategic Planning


Strategic Planning  Professional Development Programs is able to assist you with the development of your unit-level strategic plan. What is your vision and mission? What can your department do to become nationally prominent? If you don't have a plan for the future, we are here to help you shape a data-driven, long-term strategic plan.


Violence Prevention


Join us for an eye opening presentation about the dangers of workplace violence in Higher Education. Topics to be discussed include CMU's workplace violence policy, how to be proactive in dangerous situations, and what to do if you are ever threatened or find yourself in a crisis. Help keep yourself and others safe.




7 Habits of Highly Effective People


This intensive, two-day workshop provides participants with a robust and tactical implementation plan to fully integrate the 7 Habits into their lives. It is designed for anyone looking to become a more effective person - regardless of your occupation, position, or stage in life. You'll learn how to improve focus, communication, and balance for yourself and your organization; how to develop professional relationships for productive collaboration; the importance of responsibility, accountability, and commitment; skills for increasing productivity by staying focused on the right things; and how to reduce conflict by understanding exactly what you can influence. Cost is $105 and covers lunch on both days and Franklin Covey workbook.


360 Degree Assessments


In 360-degree feedback, employees' behaviors and skills are evaluated not only by subordinates, but also by peers, customers, supervisors, and themselves.  Professional Development Programs will assist you with the development, online distribution, and review of the 360-degree tool. As a result of a one-on-one coaching session that follows, employees will understand their strengths and challenges, leave with development goals, and be able to identify a clear process for achieving them.


Change and Transitions


Change happens!  Whether at home or work, chosen or not, we all face change of various kinds and intensities.  How can I work through change to obtain the best possible results, while helping those around me who may be experiencing some of the same things?  Based on 3 different models of change, this interactive workshop will explore the dynamics involved, so participants can better navigate through both the change and their personal reactions to it.


Employee Engagement Surveys


What we have known all along has now been quantified by solid research: a happy employee is a productive employee. Employee morale impacts absenteeism, turnover, productivity, and virtually every business measure imaginable. This one hour workshop is designed to introduce you to the key factors that impact employee engagement, and how you can use a simple survey in your units to improve employee satisfaction.


Empowerment and Delegation


Empowerment is a leadership strategy for creating high-performance workplaces.  Empowered employees are typically motivated, committed, and often take on the role of a leader.  So how do you accomplish this?  Professional Development Programs will outline eight dimensions of empowerment that are critical to successful delegation and participation. Participants will understand how leaders create the environment for empowerment and will leave with an action plan to develop their own leadership skills.




Character counts.  It's all we have.  As CMU staff, what are the ethical standards to which we are being held? What policies cover our doctrines of ethical behavior? How do we report violations? This workshop is meant for workgroups or teams who would like to explore ethical decision making.  Leading with Emotional Intelligence


A strong leader ignites motivation and unleashes productivity creating an environment in which individuals want to 'follow'.  A person with high emotional intelligence has mastery in self-management and interpersonal dynamics.  Combine the two and the result is the EQ Leader! Attend this seminar and learn the link between leadership and emotional intelligence. Specifically, we will focus on blending the five competencies of emotional intelligence (self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, social skill) and the six leadership styles for interpersonal success (coaching, pace-setting, democratic, affiliative, authoritative, and coercive).

In this customizable workshop, Hersey Blanchard's Situational Leadership grid provides a useful tool for assessing and understanding not only your own leadership style, but the leadership development level of the staff with whom you work.  Participants examine various situations to determine the best intervention and development technique.

Interpersonal/Conflict Management


5 Dysfunctions of a Team


Based on the bestselling book by Patrick Lencioni. In his book, Lencioni reviews the five dysfunctions that prevent most organizations from optimally performing: absence of trust, fear of conflict, inability to commit, lack of accountability, and inattention to results. Participants will explore how to apply strategies to overcome the challenges teams encounter.


Conflict Resolution


Resolving conflict is first nature for some, and feared by the rest.  Learn the five different conflict styles: Competing, Collaborating, Compromising, Avoiding, Accommodating.  This workshop will help participants to understand how and when to use each of these styles in conflict resolution, as well as when to avoid them.


Dealing with Difficult People


The Naysayer. The Know-It-All. The Talker.  You know them; they are the difficult people you interact with every day. In this interactive workshop, learn how to recognize what type of difficult person you are dealing with and how to employ sound coping strategies to work more effectively.


Difficult Conversations


We've all been there. We need to talk, but we would rather not! Whether it's about performance, discipline, emotions, or the neighbor's dog, the struggle of what to say and how to say it weighs heavy. Utilizing principles and ideas from a variety of resources, we will look at the dynamics of what is involved in this kind of conversation, and explore practical ways to make them less stressful and more productive.




MBTI Personality Assessment 


Take the MBTI personality inventory and discover your natural preferences and style. Learn to develop an understanding of personal style so that you are able to interact more effectively with others. This workshop explores the impact of personal style on relationships, teams, and work units. Communication, decision-making, and problem-solving will all be addressed.

Setting good goals and knowing what the "Big Rocks" are is one thing.  Actually doing them when they should be done is a different skill altogether.  In this workshop, we'll explore major principals for how to tackle the big "stuff" now instead of later.


Optimizing Your Outlook: Time Management Strategies


In this workshop, you will explore how understanding the "bigger picture" can be integrated and applied to your MS Outlook software. When you complete this workshop you will learn how to:         

  • Get the most usability and functionality out of your software
  • Build an intelligent folder system
  • Strategically manage your calendar
  • Apply creative methods to make your interpersonal communications more efficient and effective

Project Management


Project Management I


This workshop will provide an overview of the major stages involved in taking a project from inception to completion. Some basic tools for managing the project will be shared and hands-on practice provided. It will lay the groundwork necessary for such scheduling tools as Gantt charts and Microsoft Project to be used effectively.


Project Management II


The focus of this workshop is on scheduling the project, using the tools of work breakdown structures, network diagrams and Gantt charts. Hands-on practice is provided in manually producing these tools. The Project Management I workshop is not a prerequisite to this workshop, but it is highly recommended if one doesn't have much official background in project management.

Online Survey Development - Beginning


The Beginning workshop will cover how to establish an account using and how to create, collect, and analyze data using this online tool. Seating is limited to 15 participants.

The Advanced workshop will be a working session for building a survey using Participants should have a survey in mind when attending. Beginning Online-Survey Training workshop is prerequisite. Seating is limited to 15 participants.
