Disability Retirement

If in MPSERS-

Non-Duty disability:

  • If you become totally and permanently unable to perform the duties of the current position or a similar position within the school for which you are trained or experienced.
  • You do not meet age and service requirements for regular pension.
  • You must have 10 or more years of service with MPSERS.
  • Your physician and an independent medical examiner certify you are totally and permanently disabled for your position or similar one for which you are qualified.
    MPSERS Board approves the disability pension.

Duty-disability:

  • If you become totally and permanently unable to perform any gainful employment because of an injury or illness that occurred as a result of your employment.
  • You do not meet age and service requirements for regular pension.
  • You are receiving weekly worker's compensation as a result of this disability.
  • Your physician and an independent medical examiner certify you are totally and permanently disabled for your position or similar one for which you are qualified.
    MPSERS Board approves the disability pension.

NOTES:

You must apply for disability retirement within 12 months after you terminate employment.

There are earnings limitations when drawing your disability retirement if you return to work.

If in the 403(b) Basic Retirement Plan:

You are vested immediately when you are in the 403(b) plan.

Participants may request a cash withdrawal from his or her annuity contract prior to termination of employment if they are totally and permanently disabled as determined by the Social Security Administration. You must self-certify your disability through TIAA-CREF or Fidelity. If you are approved as disabled, then you would be able to withdraw your monies at any age without a penalty.

NOTE*** You may be eligible for Long Term Disability coverage and Social Security Disability. You will need to apply for these two coverage's if you are applying for retirement disability. It is part of our LTD policy.
