University Retirement Plans - Employer's contribution
403(b) Basic Retirement Plan:
A defined contribution plan where a percentage of employee earnings is contributed by CMU to the employee's individual 403(b) basic retirement account. The recordkeeper for all of the CMU Retirement Plans is TIAA. The percentage contributed is based on the employee group. Open to all half-time or greater benefit eligible employees who are not eligible for MPSERS.
A defined benefit plan that is open only to those employees who have participated in MPSERS prior to 1/1/1996 at one of the following seven institutions: Central Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, Ferris State University, Lake Superior State University, Michigan Technological University, Northern Michigan University, or Western Michigan University.
Tax-Deferred Investment Plans - Employee's contribution
The 403(b) and 457(b) are voluntary plans and all contributions are made by the employee on a pre-tax basis. Contributions must be deferred as a percentage of salary and must be done in quarter (1/4) increments.
No matter which University retirement plan you are in, MPSERS or the 403(b) Basic Retirement Plan, by contributing additional monies from your check to a tax-deferred investment plan, you are increasing the amount you will have so you can retire when you are ready. It is important to start saving as soon as possible so your contributions can grow and compound over time. All supplemental retirement monies are deducted on a pre-tax basis, so not only are you saving more for the future, but you are also saving on your taxes by lowering your taxable income while you are working.
